Frequently Asked Questions and Answers about Kybella®
What is KYBELLA?
KYBELLA (deoxycholic acid) is the first and only FDA-approved treatment that is used in adults to improve the appearance of moderate to severe submental fullness or “Double Chin”. Kybella is a series of tiny injections used to permanently destroy the fat cells creating the Double Chin.
How does KYBELLA work?
The active ingredient in KYBELLA is deoxycholic acid, and is naturally occurring substance in all of our bodies. Deoxycholic acid is secreted by the gallbladder and is important for breaking down fat that we consume in our diet.
When injected into the fat beneath your chin, KYBELLA causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those will never be able to store or accumulate fat in the future.
How many people have been treated with KYBELLA?
KYBELLA has been the focus of a global clinical development program involving over 20 clinical studies with more than 2,600 patients worldwide, of which over 1,600 have been treated with KYBELLA. Our providers were one of the first 500 injectors trained in the US to provide Kybella. We are both honored and excited to bring Kybella to Columbia Laser Skin Center and the Gorge.
What are the side effects?
The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of firmness around the treatment area. KYBELLA can cause other more rare and serious side effects, including trouble swallowing and nerve injury in the jaw that can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness. Fortunately, these rare side effects are NOT permanent nor dangerous.
How many treatments will I need?
Everyone will require a minimum of 2 treatments. For those with a larger area or desiring a more defined jawline, they may need up to 4 treatments with Kybella. Many patients experience visible results in 2 to 4 treatment sessions. During these sessions, our provider will administer
KYBELLA into the fat under your chin using multiple injections with a very tiny needle. Up to 6 treatment sessions may be administered spaced 6 weeks apart.
How long will the results last?
When injected into the fat under your chin, KYBELLA causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. After the aesthetic response is achieved, retreatment with KYBELLA is not expected. In other words; it is permanent.
WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE?
All of our clients have commented on how comfortable their Kybella treatment was. Before your treatment we give you a dose of both Ibuprofen and Extra Strength Tylenol. We then have you apply a prescription numbing cream that we give you at your consultation visit, to apply at home an hour before your treatment. We use the smallest gauge needle and ice to make your treatment with us as comfortable as possible. Some people do experience a mild warming/aching sensation during and up to 15 minutes after their treatment. Following your treatment you may experience mild tenderness to the touch. This may only last a few days to a week.
