Most CoolSculpting Elite sessions last between 35 and 75 minutes per treatment area, though your total time with us will depend on how many areas we address in a single visit. One of the things we love about the Elite system is its dual-applicator design, which allows our specialists to treat two areas at the same time, covering your abdomen and flanks in the same window it once took to treat just one.
We want your time at Columbia Laser Skin Center to feel comfortable rather than clinical, so we provide snacks, beverages and entertainment while your treatment runs. When your session is done, you can head straight back to your day with no recovery period required. The first five to seven minutes of a CoolSculpting Elite treatment are typically the most intense. As the applicator attaches and cooling begins, you will feel strong suction and a cold sensation, sometimes accompanied by a tugging or aching sensation as tissue is drawn into the cup. Most of our patients describe this as uncomfortable but very manageable, and the area generally goes numb within minutes.
When the applicator is removed, your provider will briefly massage the treated area, which may feel a little unusual since the tissue is temporarily firm, but it is brief and has been shown to improve your results. In the days following treatment, some temporary soreness, tingling or firmness is normal and typically resolves within a few days.
It depends on your body and your goals. Some patients achieve the outcome they are looking for in a single cycle per treatment area, while others benefit most from two or more cycles, particularly for larger areas or more comprehensive contouring.

CoolSculpting Elite results develop gradually, which is actually part of what makes them look so natural.
After your treatment, your body begins processing and eliminating the destroyed fat cells on its own, and visible changes typically start appearing around three to four weeks in. Most patients see their most significant improvement between two and three months, with some continuing to notice refinement for up to six months after their final session.
The clinical data reflect what we see in our own practice: a 2023 peer-reviewed systematic review in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found mean fat thickness reductions of 19.6% to 32.3% by ultrasound measurement, and research in the Journal of Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology found visible improvements in 86% of treated subjects.
There is no downtime and no restrictions on your routine after your session. You can go straight back to work, exercise or whatever your day holds.
Some patients experience mild temporary effects over the following days, including redness, swelling, tingling, firmness or sensitivity in the treated area. These are completely normal signs that your body is responding exactly as it should, and they typically resolve on their own within a few days to a couple of weeks. CoolSculpting Elite is not a weight loss treatment. It is a body contouring treatment designed for people who are at or near a healthy weight but have stubborn fat in specific areas that has not responded to diet and exercise.
Those persistent areas, whether it is the lower belly, the flanks or the inner thighs, are exactly where CoolSculpting Elite excels. It targets the subcutaneous fat just beneath the skin in those specific areas, permanently reducing it.
If your primary goal is significant weight loss, CoolSculpting Elite would not be our first recommendation. But if your goal is to refine specific areas of your body, it can produce lasting results that diet and exercise alone cannot deliver.
The difference comes down to what happens to fat cells at the cellular level. When you lose weight through diet and exercise, fat cells throughout your body shrink in size but remain in place, ready to expand again if your weight fluctuates. CoolSculpting Elite works differently at the cellular level. It permanently destroys a portion of the fat cells in the treated area, which your body then naturally eliminates over the weeks following treatment.
Those specific cells do not return, which is why CoolSculpting Elite results can last in stubborn areas in ways that diet and exercise alone sometimes cannot. Remaining fat cells elsewhere in the body can still expand with significant weight gain, so maintaining a stable, healthy lifestyle after treatment is always important.
The ideal candidate is someone at or close to a healthy weight with specific, pinchable areas of stubborn fat that have not responded to a consistent diet and exercise routine.
