What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is one of the most common cosmetic procedures and is used to remove unwanted body or facial hair. Laser hair removal uses lasers to vaporize unwanted hair at the source. Over time, your hair will respond to the treatment and fall out, so you are left with smooth results. Typically, treatments are quick and can be done in under an hour.
It takes around four to seven treatments to see your desired results, varying from patient to patient. Patients with dark, thick hair and light skin have the most contrast and tend to see the most significant results. Laser hair removal is touted as a semi-permanent procedure, meaning after a few years, you may need additional treatments to tame new hair growth.
Laser Hair Removal v. Shaving
At this point, you may be wondering, why should you choose laser hair removal instead of shaving or waxing. Laser hair removal offers less stubborn regrowth than shaving and less pain associated with the process than consistent waxing, making it an ideal choice for hair removal. It also lasts years instead of a couple of weeks or months, making hair removal a less tedious task.
Laser Hair Removal Treatment Types
There is both laser hair removal for the face and laser hair removal for the body. Laser hair removal on the face creates a smoother appearance and allows any make-up applications to be more evenly distributed. Laser hair removal on the body helps to combat areas of heavy hair growth, like the legs or underarms. It can help control sweat odors and brighten skin.
Laser Hair Removal For Face
Laser hair removal for your face is used to combat stubborn sideburns, cheek hairs, or underlip fuzz. Treatments tend to be quicker because areas of the face are more concentrated. In addition to removing hair on your face, laser hair removal for your face provides anti-aging properties, stimulating collagen production and offering smooth skin and a youthful glow.
Laser Hair Removal For Body
Laser hair removal for the body provides an alternate solution for patients with sensitive skin, who frequently suffer from ingrown hairs or razor bumps. While typical shaving or waxing methods only remove hair, laser hair removal for your body helps to even your skin tone and can improve sun spots or slight texture issues on the surface of the skin.
Laser Hair Removal Process
The laser hair removal process typically starts with an initial consultation appointment to learn patient facts and set treatment goals. During your procedure appointment, we will begin by cleaning and numbing the impacted area. We will then complete your laser hair removal process and go over any aftercare instructions with you, so you see the best results.
Initial Consultation
During your initial consultation, we will ask you about your medical history and any prescriptions you are currently taking. We will then go over areas you want to target with laser hair removal treatment. Rotating specials are available to help with procedure costs. After your initial consultation, we will schedule your treatment and follow-up appointments.
Cleaning and Numbing
Prior to your laser hair removal treatment, the impacted area will be cleaned and numbed to ward off infection and pain. More extensive laser hair removal procedures may use local anesthesia to best administer treatment. This typically takes place around 30 minutes to an hour before your laser hair removal treatment begins. You should avoid any hair removal or injectable methods in the area you want to treat for around six weeks prior to your laser hair removal.
Laser Hair Removal Treatment
During laser hair removal treatment, you may feel some discomfort as the lasers are applied. However, instead of being described as painful, it is more regularly described as a flicking sensation. Typically, the most sensitive areas are on the face, bikini line, or underarm area. Reversely, laser hair removal on the legs or stomach tends to be more manageable for patients.
Recovery
The numbing creams or anesthetics administered prior to treatment are helpful in reducing major side effects during the laser hair removal procedure. After treatment, your skin may feel like it has a slight sunburn for the first few days. This may be accompanied by redness, bumps, or slight swelling. Symptoms should quickly fade, and you will see your desired hair loss occur over the next month. Exfoliating and limiting sun exposure can speed up your recovery process.

Frequently Asked Questions
Optimal results are seen after a series of treatments. Typically, a series of 8 treatments is done to begin with. After the 8th treatment an evaluation is done to determine if more treatments will be required to achieve your desired results. Some clients will have desired results by then while others will require additional treatments. However, during the treatment series you will notice a gradual reduction of hair after each treatment. Laser hair removal does not work on blond, white, gray or red hair types.
Redness is the most common side effect, which typically lasts only a few minutes for most people. Occasionally, redness may last until the end of the day.
The cost of laser hair removal is based on the size of the area treated and the number of treatments needed for optimal results. You will need a minimum of 8 treatments and will have a treatment every 4-8 weeks (depending upon the area of the body being treated) throughout the series. There are some clients that may require more than 8 treatments for optimal results, because of hormonal status; the area of the body being treated; the color or texture of hair; or medical conditions. At your consultation we can give you quote on price and number of treatments that we expect you will need.
There is no downtime associated with laser hair removal. However, we do have some specific pre- and post- treatment instructions that we like for everyone to follow for maximum efficacy and safety of your treatment. It is important not to expose yourself to direct sunlight or tan for at least 48 hours after your treatment. Ask for a copy of our pre- and post-treatment instructions for more information.
Laser hair reduction will permanently remove approximately 75-85% of your hair after 8 or more treatments. The remaining hair after your series is often very light and fine compared to the dark, coarse hair that you may have started with. Because our bodies are covered with millions of dormant hair follicles, over time some of those hair follicles can emerge out of dormancy and begin growing new hair that wasn’t present during your laser treatments. So, you may need to periodically come in for “touch-up” treatments over time.
For maximum comfort we use ice packs, chilled gel, and our laser is equipped with a gold-plated sapphire cooling tip to help cool your skin during the laser treatment. With these measures the laser treatment for many people is very comfortable. Without any comfort measures it feels very similar to a small snapping rubberband.
