Laser Nail Fungus FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions about Laser Nail Fungus Treatment

When are results expected?
Because the growth of the toenails is so slow (1-2 mm per month), about half the rate of growth of fingernails, it may take 6 months to notice any normal nail growth. The appearance of normal nail growth represents a successful treatment. It can take 12-18 months for the nail to appear completely healthy. People with more severe, long-standing infection may not be candidates for laser nail fungus treatments. If undertaken, they will need on-going maintenance treatments to maintain good results and may not completely healthy appearing nails.

What does it feel like?
Laser nail fungus treatment is comfortable and feels like a gentle warming sensation.

What are the typical side effects?
There are very few if any side effects with laser nail fungus treatment. Rarely, redness of the skin surrounding the nails may occur.

What is the down time?
There is no down time associated with laser nail fungus treatment. However, we do have very specific after care instructions that we want you to follow after your treatment to improve the success of your laser treatment.

How long does the treatment last?
Because those affected with nail fungus are genetically susceptible to fungal infections and because even clean environments can contain fungus; it is possible that you may become reinfected with the fungus. We provide instructions on what you can do to improve your chances of avoiding reinfection in the future.

How does it work?
For the laser nail fungus treatment to be successful the nail must be of normal nail thickness. If not, you will need to have your nails filed down to normal nail thickness. This can either be done by you or a nail salon. The reason for this is so that the laser energy may penetrate through the nail to the nail plate where the fungus resides. It is here that the laser energy destroys the fungus that causes the abnormal appearing nail.
